Adventure to Alpine Meadows

Hello Lake Tahoe!

Last Sunday I drove to Alpine Meadows to enjoy the beautiful weather, take some pictures and meet up with a couple of friends along the way. The first stop was Sand Harbor which is part of the Nevada State Park, located on Highway 28 approximately 2.5 miles south of Incline Village. It was a typical bluebird day and a bit chilly! After a nice run on the beach and splash in the lake, we climbed up on the rocks to get some pictures and fresh air.

Sand Harbor

It was time for Brunch so we headed to the Blue Onion Restaurant in Kings Beach which is located right next to the Brockway Golf Course. This restaurant gets 4 stars for their Sunday Brunch if you get a table outside under the bright yellow umbrellas facing the lake. Today, I had the standard Eggs Benedict and Bloody Mary. It was Excellent, and I will be back soon! Next, headed onward to Kings Beach State Park for a run on the beach. Kings Beach State Park is dog-friendly, people friendly beach and a favorite place of mine to catch the sunset!

Kings Beach

After making a few more stops along Tahoe City and Sunnyside, we continued on Hwy 89 towards Homewood and Tahoma. The shoreline along the Tahoe West Shore and Chambers Beach is much quieter without much development. Let's keep it that way!

Tahoma

There are all endless things to do on the West Shore. Sugar Pine State Park is open year round for cross country skiing, biking, hiking and Homewood Mountain Ski Resort is one of the best places for snowboarders. Another highlight is the Beautiful Desolation Wilderness which has several nearby trailheads.  Other points of interest include visiting the Tahoe Maritime Museum and dining at the famous West Shore Cafe.

Visiting the Magical Tahoe West shore is like going back in time, in fact, not much has changed in 20 years. You can even rent a VHS movie at the local Sunnyside Market and look at the old pictures of fishermen holding their trophies caught right out of the lake and along the Truckee River.

Sunnyside Market
The nearby Obexer's General Market in Homewood is another interesting place. Located right across from the Homewood Ski resort, this market has wi-fi, great sandwiches and interesting selection of beer! Be sure to check out the family tree of photographs in the cafe area.

Obexer Family Photographs
After a quick stroll along the beach it was time to head up to Alpine Meadows to visit my friend, "Mr. Truckee". The Resort was packed with spring skiers in all colors.  Alpine Meadows is a favorite among the locals, in fact, right now they are offering a Spring Ski pass for only $99.00. With 48 plus feet of snow this year (average annual snowfall is 14 ft), and regular day passes running $61.00, this is a fantastic value!

Alpine Meadows
Ended the day at Happy Hour at the River Grill - voted best of North Lake Tahoe!. The River Grill is located right on the Truckee River near Fanny Bridge and it is the "In Place" to be after a day skiing on the slopes or rafting down the Truckee River. Talk about great food, bar and people! With summer on the way, be sure to book early for Lodging at the River Ranch.  For additional info on Truckee activities and things to do, Please visit the Truckee Travel Guide.

South Lake Tahoe - Hotels, Lodging, Cabins

Secret's Inn

South Lake Tahoe offers many choices for lodging from first class hotels and casinos to low budget motels off the main strip. Rent a furnished vacation cabin from 50Cabins, stay in a luxurious Suite at Harrah's or bring your RV and park it in one of the many campgrounds!

If gambling and nightlife is a high priority, consider one of the four major hotel casinos located in Stateline, Nevada. Of all the hotel casinos, I am partial to Harrah's Hotel and Casino because of the rustic rooms, great selection of restaurants and  the overall consistency of the service. In addition, Harrah's always does a first class job when hosting special events for guests including golf events at the Edgewood Golf Resort. Other hotel casinos worth considering are the Mont Bleu Resort Casino (which has a special floor for pets), Harvey's and the Horizon Casino Resort. If on a budget, request a lake view room at the Horizon and walk right across the street to all the action at the higher end hotels, Heavenly Village and the Gondola.  Harveys Lake Tahoe is also a nice hotel and people come from all over to attend the outdoor arena and summer concerts and the famous Lake Tahoe restaurant, The Sage Room.

Families might want to stay at the Marriott Timberlodge or the Embassy Suites. Both are luxury resorts offering spacious villas and suites and within walking distance of the Casinos, Heavenly Gondola and the  Heavenly Village Shops. Further up the mountain on the Nevada side is The Ridge Tahoe, another good choice for families and skiiers.

There are dozens of less expensive lodging alternatives around town but, I would be a bit cautious since South Lake Tahoe motels come in all flavors. A good choice for lodging near the casinos is the Forest Suites Resort. There is also Lakeland Village, Inn by the LakeTimbercove Lodge (Lake Front with the hip Blue Bistro Grill), the Secrets Inn (pet friendly), 3 Peaks Resort & Beach Club (pet friendly). local favorite Fireside Lodge, or the Royal Valhalla.  For lovers, there is always the renowned  Fantasy Inn with on site wedding chapel.

Summer visitors might want to consider the historic cabins a the Zephyr Cove Resort, or the campgrounds at Camp Richardson. Both choices are lakefront and offer boating, biking, fishing, hiking and a great selection of restaurants nearby. Campers might also consider Fallen Leaf Campground or Nevada Beach Campground.

These are some of My picks for lodging in South Lake Tahoe. If you would like to submit a Review, please go to Lake Tahoe's Alive.  Please check back as this article will be updated. Have a Great Day!

2011 Business Expo - Pedal to Prosperity

The 2011 Business Expo, Pedal to Prosperity, was held March 25 at the Mont Bleu Convention Center in Stateline, Nevada. Forget the fact that the Tahoe basin received 3 feet of fresh powder only 48 hours before, hundreds showed up to mingle, network and support local businesses in the South Lake Tahoe Community!

There were 72 vendors exhibiting, a Silent Auction and Live Entertainment. Some of the larger exhibitors included Heavenly Valley, Amgen Tour of California, League to Save Lake Tahoe, South Tahoe Association of Realtors, Anytime Fitness, The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition, The Tahoe Tribune, Tahoe TV and the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra. As the night rolled on the Silent Auction began and more people kept arriving. The Food, Beverage, Silent Auction and Live Entertainment were Exceptional!

The restaurants did an outstanding job Wowing everyone with a wonderful array of food and beverages. The Beacon Bar and Grill was pouring their Famous Rum Runners and The Fresh Catch was serving fresh shucked oysters on the half shell. The Lakeside Inn had a very impressive South West Menu. The Mont Bleu Chefs put on a fabulous buffet of Ahi Tuna and lamp chops. It was truly an Exceptional Event!.

Not only was it fun to see old faces who are the foundation behind South Lake Tahoe, it was wonderful to meet new people and find out about their businesses. Thanks to the Chamber of Commerce for Sponsoring a Great Evening and Thanks to all the great people around town for keeping Lake Tahoe Alive!

1862 David Wally's Hot Springs Resort and Spa - Fountain of Youth

David Walley's Resort is a natural Hot Springs, Hotel, Restaurant and Spa Resort located in Genoa Nevada. Founded by David and Harriet Walley and two partners in 1862, Walley's began as only a tent for shelter and mineral bath for 50 cents. The spa was built, later burned down, rebuilt and today it is time-shared. Despite all these changes, the sacred waters remain. People still travel from all over the world to visit David Walley's. Even Mark Twain and Clark Gable have soaked in the magical Walley's Hot Springs!

The healing qualities of the mineral waters are what many call "The Fountain of Youth".  The hot springs absorb a high content of mineral elements from the ground including silica, sulfur, lithium and boron. These elements are proven to heal, rejuvenate and restore the body.

Today, there are seven separate hot mineral pools all varying in temperatures between 98 and 104 degrees. Some of the pools are large, some small with jacuzzi jets... some are middle sized. You can soak in the morning, under the stars at night, in the Snow or when it is 100 degrees in the summer. David Walley's has it all, in fact, in addition to the mineral pools, there's a steam room, sauna, work out room, swimming pool, full spa offering massages, facials, body wraps and scrubs as well as an outstanding restaurant and bar.

Go Treat Yourself today!

Historic Thunderbird Lodge - Incline Village

Incline Village was once owned by Captain George Whittell, a very "colorful" character from San Francisco. Whittell was born into a wealthy banking family and had the intuition to liquidate his stock holdings right before the Stock Market Crash of 1929. Nevada tax advantages drew Whittell to Lake Tahoe where he purchased 100,000 acres and 29 miles of lakefront land. Whittell began building his dream home in the middle of the Great Depression. It took 2 years and 100 workers to complete the French Tudor Mansion known today as the "Thunderbird Lodge".  Rumors still fly about Whittell's high style playboy life. From exotic animals to high gaming parties in his Card Room, the Thunderbird Lodge was the Place to be for Who's Who.  In the 1950's, Whittell sold 9000 acres to Crystal Bay Development Company for 25 million.

George Whittell's historical Thunderbird Lodge is a historical landmark open to the public for touring from May - October.

Mountain Biking in the Pinenuts

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting up with a new Facebook friend and experiencing off road Mountain Biking in the Pinenut area located in Gardnerville, NV.  Pinenut Mountain Trails

The day could not have been more perfect. With the beautiful Spring weather we've been having, it was the ultimate reward after a long week. It was clear skies and the temperature was in the mid 50's.

The entire trip was estimated to be 10 miles. We brought our dogs which added to the adventure. The first 5 miles were mostly uphill and a bit challenging.  I learned to keep pedaling when I hit the quick sand, lean back on the bike when going downhill, roll on the rocks and never, ever slam on breaks when going downhill.

Getting to the top and looking out over the beautiful untouched land below and breathing the crystal crisp air was the ultimate Reward. It was breathtaking and just another reminder how much I love the Carson Valley of Nevada.

The trip down was fast and exhilarating. Sliding through rocks, sand and hitting turns and grooves was so much fun! I even managed to get through muddy waters without wiping out. The gorgeous sunset on the way downhill gave the trip extra points.

Aside from enjoying the ride, I met a wonderful person, Carolan and her dog, Maya. We had alot of laughs and even discovered we had mutual Tahoe friends...

At the end, we all had big smiles on our faces. Here is a photo of my dog, Lexie at the end of the ride. It was worth the mud and dirt!

We are looking forward to the next ride!

Have a Great Day and Remember to Keep Lake Tahoe Alive and Blue!!!
